A “light” Concrete Work in the Buda Castle

The remodelling and reconstruction works of the imposing structure (the former city hall) located in the Buda Castle started in November 2015 during which the flooring of certain areas were carried out with special DDC-made light concrete, a member of the Thermocrete family of products, the Ökocell 350 PSH expanded polystyrene insulating lightweight concrete.

Thermocrete is the perfect solution for, among others, insulating screed pouring. Due to its beneficial solid concrete characteristics it has easy workability (large surfaces over short time) and on the account of its plastic consistency it does not need any special compression. The fittings and cable pipes running in the floor can be built in effortlessly, and it perfectly encompasses and protects the fittings to be built in.

The lightweight concrete used in the barrel and Prussian vaults of the Buda Castle were made from DDC’s Vác CEM II/B-S 42.5N Portland slag cement with the addition of limestone, foaming agents and EPS. This lightweight concrete type is the ideal material for filling and backfilling, since in case of high workability thickness it does not exert lateral pressure to the structural walls. In case of old houses it is perfectly suitable for substituting the slag cement filling. In addition to all, it possesses exceptional permeability as well.

The works were carried out by the Kaposvár-based ÖKO 2002 Kft. The next phase will see a 5 cm thick screed layer laid on the insulating lightweight concrete floor. The total lightweight concrete requirement of the project will be 1060 m³.
